Auckland, New Zealand — USA Basketball's Under 19 men's basketball team didn't need the services of Kansas University's Tyshawn Taylor in a 112-55 drilling of Egypt on Saturday at the FIBA Under 19 World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand.
Taylor, KU's sophomore combo guard from New Jersey, sat out the action because of a bout with the flu.
"He came down with it yesterday. He had a fever and was not feeling well, so he sat out the game," USA Basketball's Craig Miller said. "Obviously we didn't need him today. We don't play tomorrow, so I think everybody thought it'd be a good idea to give him an extra day off," Miller added.
"Tyshawn was at the game, but not feeling great. Hopefully he'll be back for our next game."
The U.S. led by 22 after one quarter and 38 by halftime. The U.S. was led by Ashton Gibbs (18 points, six assists) and Shelvin Mack (14 points, four assists. John Shurna had 13 points, while Howard Thompson and Terrico White each had 13 points for the U.S. (3-0).
The U.S. has qualified for the second round. The U.S. placed first in Group B. The top three from Group B will face the top three teams from Group A — likely to be Puerto Rico, Lithuania and Greece — on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

That has to be a buzzkill, but I hope he feels better for the second round! He said it himself that this was the highlight of his career and I hope he gets his chance to shine some more. Good luck TT

OH tyshawn.. we missed you.... we only held egypt to 55..... of course... hardly any of these under 19 kids CAN play defense.... So Tyshawn's role of stopper probably was missed...... before we out scored them by nearly 60

Defense will be the reason that Taylor does/doesn't become a big time contributor every night for the Hawks next season. Without question he has the developing offensive skills necessary but his defense needs to become less promise and more delivery.
The same goes for Xavier. He has the proven ability to shoot the open jumper...but can he put the ball on the floor and score against D-1 competition...and will he have the mental toughness to buckle down and play D-1 level defense?
With all the experience and talent on the Jayhawk squad, defense could be the deal breaker for anyone's playing time. Xavier has proven offensive skill sets...but he has not proven yet whether he has the ability or willingness to play the kind of defense required at KU.

Great comment above about defense, one of my favorite aspects of SelfBall...I would surmise that by Xavier choosing KU, he knows full well what Bill Self is expecting. It is no secret anymore in the country about Self's love of defense. While I still think the current team needs to improve its overall team defense to approach the 08Champs level, it was astonishing to see the "new kids" hold opposing teams to under 40% FG for the season. And that should only get better (worse for the opposition). I will safely assume if a player chooses KU, he knows there's alot of work and time he will have to put in to do all what SelfBall requires...

Boot camp and preseason practice are always wake up calls for incoming freshman...no matter how talented. Boot camp requires players to demonstrate their mental toughness on the court...without a basketball in their hands...something they've never had to do before.
Preseason practice introduces them to a level of talent and intensity that they have never before experienced. It goes without saying that you don't get the opportunity to take the floor for KU without physical talent...it's the mental side that separates the wheat from the chaff.
Can't wait to get started.

wasn't it xavier that got posterized by willie warren a couple of summers back? shouldn't happen next year, but i'm pretty sure it was him.
shurna plays for northwestern. got to see him at the big 10 tourney, and he is really skilled, meaning he stood out as being pretty talented. that's why i remember the name. i didn't realize he was on the team, but he can score in lots of different ways. he has no hops, but he does have a really nice game. he hasn't filled out yet, probably needs to, but he does a lot w/ what he's got. is battle from penn st on the squad?

Yeah he dunked over X. He fouled him in the process and got a T for the taunt. I have no problem with our guy standing in and taking the charge (not called). there is not much you can do if someone can jump OVER you while you have position. Note: this year that would have (should have) been called a charge. Next year it is a little unclear. The help defender is not supposed to get that call under the basket this year.
