Taylor scores eight points in U.S. basketball victory over Greece

Kansas University sophomore guard Tyshawn Taylor scored eight points, helping the USA men's U-19 team to an 85-69 victory over Greece on Monday at the World Championship in Auckland, New Zealand.

Taylor, who did not play in the team's previous game because of the flu, was 2-for-7 from the floor and 1-for-2 from three-point range. He made three of four free throws and posted three rebounds, two assists and five turnovers in 20 minutes.

Georgia forward Howard Thompkins led all scorers with 22 points on 10-for-14 shooting.

The U.S. (4-0) will take on Puerto Rico (3-1) on Tuesday.

This is more the statline we are used to from TT, but this was during flu recovery. I can't wait to see what he does when he gets back and is playing with guys he is used to playing with. And way to go US team. Greece is one of the toughest teams we'll face out there.

i was thinking that he's back to his usual type of play. he can carry your team, and he can crucify your team.

2 of 7, and 2:5 assist:t.o.?!

i don't see his consistency getting any better, and this is against lesser competition. i could make a bunch of guesses, but i won't.

i don't know how much this kid sees the floor next year. could he take a shirt?

Let's hope this is because of recovering from the flu. 5 turnovers in 20 minutes is crazy.

I checked out the tourney stats and TT holds one undistinguished record for the series: most turnovers per game of any player on the USA U19 squad with 3 TOPG. Darius Miller (Kentucky) is second on the US squad with 2.5. This compares to TT's 2.37 TOPG during the 2008-09 season. Fortunately for Taylor, he is still dishing 3.3 assists per game in the FIBA series, keeping his assist-turnover ratio respectable, if not dynamic.

I don't think a sophomore who's gonna play at least 25 minutes a game for a projected Final Four team would consider redshirting. Possibly the dumbest post all summer, yovoy. Don't get too hung up on stats, folks.

Reading through the posts, maybe it's just me but how many turnovers did Sherron and Tyshawn have last year because guys weren't ready for the pass? We saw all year the Morris twins consistently out of position to recieve a pass or lagging behind the tempo of the game. We all saw the way Ty loves to speed the game up and he does sometimes play too fast for the other guys. European teams are notorious for playing at a faster pace and zone defense that forces bad passes, and even then Ty probably still feels s**tty but doesn't want to sit out on this expierence. Yovoy, you just became that guy, you know, the one when you're at a bar and there's that one drunken idiot standing on the table with his shirt off. That's you. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

wow, glad i spurred some discussion, but of course it turns in to burnfest. grrr.

how many games did he just "hold serve" last year? he was up and (too many times) down. granted, he was pressed into service early.

bratshawk, you'll get no apology unless he plays more consistently. i still haven't seen it EVER. i'm not against him, and yeah he's sick, but this is the same stuff i've been seeing from him for awhile - and against much lesser competition than he's going to be seeing. are you guys just this sensitive because carl put you in your places last week?

does one of his turds go by the handle 'boulderhawk'? just curious b/c someone mentioned his turds and athleticism.

please, who's he gonna START in front of, and at what position!? what's he do offensively OR defensively that's going to get him on that floor in the first five? is he consistent on either end? does he turn it over? does he shoot the ball particularly well from anywhere? when he's ON he's ON! i'll admit he saved our bacon once or twice, but really...

So, where's he going to start:

1-sherron (nope!)
2-x (nope!)
3- ? (nope!)
4-doesn't matter
5-doesn't matter

look, he could start and star on lots of teams around this fine country of ours, but on this squad, he won't.

oh, i forgot that they put the "reason" for a turnover in the book. my fault.

maybe you shouldn't go to c&w bars if you're seeing "that guy". just sayin'.

i laud tyshawn for going, and for working on his game. i hope it works out for him, and for alllllll of the "wonderful fans" on this comment scroll.

....God's mercy on my soul? Guys w/ shirts off in the bar? doesn't seem dramatic or queeny at all....but thanks for the "blessing".

Actually, I'm in the camp that Taylor, at least to start the season, will not start unless he has greatly improved his defense and shows that he values possesions more. Those are two things that Self is huge on, and Morningstar is far better than Taylor in those categories. Would I be surprised if these qualities improve and Taylor is starting at the end of the year? No, not at all. But there's a reason that Morningstar played much more minutes per game than Taylor last year, and don't think that Brady won't be improved some too.

yovoy (anonymous) says...

wow.

i don't think that any of us want tt to fail, we all know that what's best for him is best for the team.

it only slightly bewilders me that morningstar played any amount more than him. after having coached against brady many times, it doesn't bewilder me at all. tt was more-highly sought after, but morningstar is mostly solid, and lots moreso (right now) than tyshawn.

Ttaylor was just not consistent as a freshman. As a sophomore he will likely be better and grow as a student/athlete. We must remember they come in as boys and hopefully leave as young men like those great examples from last year's squad.

3 TOs per game? Face it. If he learns from this, he'll be a whole lot better when he plays with players he plays with every day and knows where they're going to cut and when. The group of players that was drafted after the Championship season, they went through the same struggles and inconsistencies as TT is going is going through now. The difference is that Rush, Chalmers, and company had 2 full seasons playing with each other. There were a whole lot of games where they struggled on offense because of turnovers earlier in their collegiate careers. And it goes the other way too. Collins had turnovers last season, because he was used to playing with guys he knew. He didn't know the younger guys so well this past season. TT is going to grow. How much is yet to be determined, but he will get better. The more they play together, the better they will be.

This is like Friends College playing KU. This is like Mullinville playing Wichita East.

I'm not sure if Greece giving USA a decent game means Greece has a really good basketball culture, or USA is just not playing up to its population advantage.

we take our "best of what's available". they take the best of their best. if we really took the top 10 or 12 players that age in this country we'd be represented by more "talented" players, but that doesn't mean the scores would be much different.

greece takes basketball (and sport in general) pretty seriously. it's well-covered on tv and in the papers, common people really follow it and are interested - and i don't mean just in athens. i mean in more rural places. taking pride in something has a funny way of manifesting success. pride and success sort of work on each other that way.

JayhawkCasey (anonymous) says...

Yovoy,
Nice statement, but poor wording with "best of what's available". We don't always take the best of the available. Coaches pick the players that they think will help the team win the most. This is how we won the 1980 gold medal in hockey.

July 7, 2009 at 1:22 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

yovoy (anonymous) says...

we "get what the coaches choose" not the "best of what's available", and certainly not the "best" like other countries do, which was the point. do you really think that x number of those that tried out are the actual "best of the best", and that the coaches were able to cull a team from that? i know there were other players eligible that didn't even try out (stupid, but they didn't).

we don't have national sports academies per se. our coaches can only choose from what's available, and whatever is available (for whatever reason) is why "small" countries keep it closer than some of us would like. that's what i was saying.

sure, sure, that's one reason we won the gold in '80, but like our nat'l hoops hegemony the ruskies suffered from over-confidence, and suffered for it. the best team usually wins, but the most talented team isn't the same as the best Team. I'd like to see us have both, and we don't always.

so then, that "best of what's available" is really what i meant.

July 7, 2009 at 3:59 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

JayhawkCasey (anonymous) says...

I agreed with you that we don't get the best of the best. There were many ball players that were eligible that were not even invited to tryout that are better players. The players invited are those that they think we can win with and then cut the players from the roster that don't do well enough at tryouts. You must be a little testy from everyone getting on your back yesterday.

Im not sure I like the critique of TT based on 1 game's stats, and after being ill...So we are going to extrapolate on his progress this summer based on 1 game? Every player matures at different rates. We all saw the fluctuations in his 18yr old consistency last year (uh, expected...), and we hope for a noticeable improvement. Keep in mind any such improvement would rise him to the top of D1 guards--and he already was chosen for the U19 USA team. I swear its stinkin' ridiculous how people seem to want a 'Chalmers' out of the box everytime. You got spoiled watching the steady rock-solid consistency of Chalmers, RussRob, and Mr. Rush--and apparently could barely stomach the turnover-fest in alot of last years games. Give the youngsters a break! But more importantly, give them each their own time to blossom! Please?
