He better get it right in the coming weeks. It bothers me because if he isn't already consistent, he may never develop into a true deep sharp shooter.

It is definitely good news that he is taking over down the stretch.

I disagree that we need him to develop a three point shot. All we need Tyshawn to be able to do next year is play aggressive without turning the ball over. He is not an outside shooter. He may turn into one at some point, but that is not what this team needs him to do this year. When you have Sherron, Brady, Reed, and X that could easily shoot over 40% from three, we won't need Tyshawn to shoot from outside. Just my 2 cents.

give him a break DUDE! he's doing almost everything right. the 3 pt. shot will come. he's a sophomore, still very young. it's not like he's that inconsistent. he was 0-1 in this game. apparently you've never watched keith langford, aaron miles or russell robinson? it's not like their 3 pt. shot was that consistent, but still they were very good players. he's been the leading scorer in almost all of their games. give him time BRO!

Again.... Paid Scholarship athlete who will play on a team with at least 3-5 three point bombers who COULD have taught him the shot.....

If this is his one weakness..... it's the one we most need out of him... sherron can walk, jog, bowl and run the ball up court, Unless sherron gets hurt we won't need Taylor in this compacity until next year....... we need him to play thorough defense and hit open jumpshots.....

Brady, Tyrel, Sherron can all teach him this shot...... X and CJ might be able to also... we won't know for a while about them though.....

You don't just "teach" any shot. Except for maybe a Duncan glasser. Besides, I remember TT hitting some bombs last year. Remember that game that pitted Sherron and the OK tea-bagger launching threes from 25ft? Didn't TT hit one of those too?

No worries. I'm tracking his assists anyway. Looks like he's averaging about 5. (in 20 min.)

How exactly is 0-1 from 3 inconsistent? Every pure 3 shooter is streaky, but Tyshawn shot it at better than 36% last year, just a point worse than Sherron. 40% from 3 is more or less the gold standard, so Tyshawn is right there, and he can do so much more. It sounds like he single-handedly won the game down the stretch, so give him a break.

Way to go Tyshawn!

It's great that he is playing in crunch time, as almost everyone on the team is seeing about 20 minutes or less of PT per game. Even better, he's taking shots and making them when it really counts. Last year, we had so many players (Especially perimeter players) often standing around waiting for Collins or Aldrich to score.

I hope he comes back with the idea that he can take and make big shots, if he's got the ball. I'm not saying that he'll have to shoot them all, but it would be nice if some of the young guns step up, and take and make big shots.

Also, I hope the head coach, Dixon of Pittsburg, doesn't cost us a game. He's playing his player (guard Ashton Gibbs of Pitt) about 25 minutes per game. Almost noone else is seeing more than 20 minutes per game on average. Nice to have one of your own on the team and get him some good experience. I just hope it won't end up biting the US team. Nothing against Gibbs, but he's not any better than Taylor, Curry, or the other US guards, imo.

Great job Tyshawn.

As for 3 point shooting, obviously 0 for one is nothing to worry about.

He is in a developmental time in his basketball career. His 3 will only get much better, and the truth is it is the least important part of his game right now, in terms of making huge strides considering he shot 36% last year.

There are great drills for kids this age to remarkably jump their percentages up in competition -- so much of it is just practice, practice, practice, but let's be real -- taking 3 months off to work on his 3 is the last thing he's able to do right now.

Thank goodness he's on this team.

i love tyshawn. i think he has such a good - well rounded game - and will lead us well even if he never shoots the three ball like Mario did. Russ Rob Aaron Miles are good expamples of people who didn't light it up but were great guards that were "glue guys" and had well rounded games. love the kid.

...but that is a weakness. Objective criticism is NOT bashing.

No clue how these games went as none of us have seen them...

Russ and Aaron didn't develop into decent shooters until their senior year.... however, one can argue neither had as muich hype or talent around thm as Sophomores..... nor could one argue that there is as much expectation from a sophomore on either shoulder......

he shot hinrich like numbers as newell's post suggested yesterday.... let's hope in season he has hinrich like improvement shooting this year also....

if he doesn't make that shot...we will force it always to X and forcing a freshman to hit shot after shot can cost you games...... even if X is as advertized...... or we will not have tyshawn playing .....which sucks.

I'm not familliar enough with the non-American basketball game to know what the difference is between the college and foreign 3-point shot line distance. It it likely that it's farther out and Ty hasn't adjusted to that length yet? That might be affecting his percentage on 3-point shots.

The international 3 point line is 20 feet, 6 inches. Last season the college line moved from 19 feet, 9 inches to 20 feet, 9 inches, so the line Tyshawn is shooting at in this tournament is actually slightly closer than the distance he shot from last year as a Jayhawk.

That is a possibility. I've copied part of an article from the FIBA website about the differences in the college game and international basketball...

three-point line
Measured from the centre of the basket:
FIBA: 6.25 m (20' 6.25") arc.
NBA: 7.24 m (23' 9") arc, which intersects with
lines parallel to the sideline that are 6.7 m (22')
from the basket at their closest point.
WNBA: 6.25 m (20' 6.25") arc.
NCAA 6.02 m (19' 9") arc.

So you are correct, that the international 3 point shot is more than 9" further back than the men's college basketball line. Interestingly enough, the FIBA 3 point line is the same distance as the WNBA line!

So, it might be at least somewhat of an adjustment for TT.

i'm not convinced that he's a "true" point guard, and i'm not convinced that he's a "2". i know ourSelf likes to recruit combo guys, and i think tyshawn is *sort of* a combo guard. so then it's not exactly accurate to compare him to miles or capt. kirk. sure when sherron wasn't brining it up, it was mostly tyshawn, and i think he did okay w/ that.

if he's viewd as a point, then we shouldn't be worried about his 3-pt pct too much. miles couldn't and often wouldn't shoot. besides being one of the 2 or 3 fastest players w/ the ball that i've ever seen, kh was a pg that could shoot. heck he could just score, which reminds me that tyshawn/team might be better served if he works on getting to around 12 ft out to the rim on the bounce. the mid-range game is the most underrated part of the game. as a guard (1,2,3) he should be able to kill teams w/ that. if you don't believe me, i'll ask if you remember a guy by the name of paul pierce. if he gets to the elbow on the bounce, he's going to score. if you sag, he's open. if you're too close, he's going to shoot freethrows. he's made a living w/ his midrange, it allows him to do all the other stuff that he can do on the offensive end. that's the game tyshawn could excel at!

if he's viewed as a 2, then let's all hope that he improves vastly before the season starts. he seems like a smart, conscientious kid, so i'm sure he'll be working on it. as for 0-4 being inconsistent, i don't know, sometimes shots don't fall. sometimes they fall even if you're banking your 3-ball in. as a 2, he should still work on his midrange game. it seems to me his mid-range game was decent, so he should look to get there more often.

We also have many other 3 point shooters on the team.So when KU wins games are you going to focus on the stats and why Tyshawn or Sherron shot poor from 3? Last year we had good games and bad, but won alot of them. Players stats will differ game to game. Lets just enjoy the season. I know it will be a great one!!

What impressed me was Tyshawn finishing 6-for-13 from the floor while making 3 shots in the last 4 minutes. In other words, he was at a minimum, 3 for 10 going into the last 4 minutes. Not an exceptional outing to that point, but he stepped up in the last 4 minutes to help his team. That is a quality we did not see out of him last season. I'm excited to see that level of confidence developing. Last year we wanted a third scorer, this year we may have 5 or 6.

Also, can you imagine how sweet life must be for Tyshawn right now. Playing ball over seas and developing his game while seeing another way of life.

Way to go Tyshawn.

YES you will see constructive criticism and non-constructive criticism on message boards all year long. Is this your first one? that's what they are... ...we probably wouldn't read them if it were all "golly gee things sure are swell."

It's ok to "discuss" things - maybe even point out weaknesses - and still be a huge fan. I tell my kids their "weaknesses" all the time (don't talk like that to your mother - close your mouth when you chew - don't run on a fly ball in shallow right with 1 out) - doesn't mean I don't love them.

Regarding "hype" - russell was hyped less - but aaron was hyped more, in my opinion.

i DID forget to give kudos on his timing! that's what impressed me most. it sounded to me like the took control of the game. that's one reason my hat IS off to him. he's working on his game; not at pick-up ball, not at the rec, not at a skills camp, but playing against players from all over the globe. he DID take over a couple of games. he is the reason we won one of them, even if he didn't make some buzzer beater. he also played well v. ou - ESP for a frosh. he let's us see the flashes of talent, we just want that to be on display consistently.

Someone wise once said that the best thing about freshmen is they become sophomores (Now, you'd have to change the saying..."The best freshmen become professionals", for the rest, repeat the saying of the wise one). I think thats true even for talented freshmen like TT.

There were many good reasons why the NCAA used to have a rule that made freshmen ineligible. Obviously, some of the reasons have changed, so that freshmen now play and even start....

well, back when the high-and-tight was what most players wore, and the unforms had belts, that rule was still kind of silly. back then student athletes weren't generating money for the university to the degree they are now. if there was a reason to change it, the reason was probably tied to money. that or some legal decision. some play and some start AND become sophomores. hooray! would you rather have some "best freshmen" don't come along and depive the the soph playing time? i would if the frosh deserved it.

This is all getting lost in semantics, maybe? Tyshawn is a "combo" guard. Expect him to develop his game in ALL areas--thats what BillBall requires: Players who are a constant threat at both ends of the floor. He already shot 36% treys as a frosh--not bad, not great, but certainly acceptable. Self especially despises turnovers, so expect all the reps in KU practices erasing alot of the uncertainty we saw as a bunch of new players last season tried to execute SelfBall.

Im not worried at all about Tyshawn's 3pt shooting. It will be there. And for anyone to suggest he should not shoot 3s, why would you say that???? Why take away a weapon? Got to keep the opposition guessing. I used to love it when RussRob hit 3s--proved everybody wrong! Combo guards are expected to do-it-all in the SelfBall system. Tyshawn needs to be able to do it all, like Chalmers, RussRob, and Collins. We expect nothing less out of Brady and Reed also. Same principles. Expect it all out of EJ, CJ also...

Briefly, I'll make one last comment on this:

There is a reason the ESPN writer is projecting Tyshawn as a late first rounder. Speed, acceleration, raw talent, intelligence, athleticism, and an overall winner's attitude.

The writer is not doing anything other than projecting due to something he saw.

Tyshawn does have an excellent stroke. That doesn't mean he's making them all at this stage of his career. But the stroke is the key -- when he gets a month (or year) to really put the time into just that skill -- isolated -- it will all become very easy for him. At that point it's a question of warming up properly before every contest/ practice while also working at least 30 minutes on this skill a day.

Use Billy Thomas as the perfect example of hard work paying off -- when you have a stroke it's about honing it, and Billy has done this as will Tyshawn when the time is right.

The best thing is that Tyshawn doesn't take those 3s at the wrong time -- he's looking for team concepts. That is a skill that is very difficult to teach if the kid doesn't get it at 19.

Speaking of statistics of our sophomores, do you guys know that Marcus Morris is on pace to destroy the record for technicals in a Kansas career? They haven't been keeping that stat for too long, but from the data I've seen, his two technicals are as much as anyone recorded in their entire careers at Kansas (along with Jeff Hawkins, and I forgot the others). Unless I'm mistaken, he only needs 1 to break the record. Any bets on how long it takes him to get their?

There's no point to any of that. Just found it interesting. I love the way Marcus improved both in skills and mentally over the course of last season and I can't wait to see him this year. His tweener-ness and lack of explosiveness should keep him at Kansas all four years. I'm excited to see it.

FIND 10..... because people are already scared of Henry on name alone..... and sherron's sherron...... they can't double from the post if morris's leap is up 6-10 inches....... It is great that we were able to beat Lithuania. I'd imagine that half of their players are PROS already. The Baltic countries really take basketball seriously. i was in Latvia a couple of months ago and was surprised to learn that basketball is pretty much on parallel with ice hockey in terms of popularity. I was also able to catch a womens basketball game on TV and the quality blew my mind. The level of play was better than any WNBA game that I've ever seen.

I dislike David Stern intensly, but he has been right about the movement to internationalize the game. It's interesting where 16 years ago, none of these teams would sniff 50 points against the best America had to offer.

Nowadays, we gotta send our best and brightest to even compete.

I love that Naismith's game has grown so popular. I love that there is competition on suhc a grand scale overseas.

When was the last time we had an NBA draft where their wasn't big buzz about some kid from overseas who was just a dynamite player ( or a dynamite bust to be.... Im speaking about you darko. )

So I guess a little good with the bad. Stern makes the league internationally attractive, but fixes playoff series to get results that would favor further european expansion. ( 2007 Suns v. Spurs series in which Amare stoudamire was suspendd for a game for walking three steps out onto the court to pick up steve nash after being thrown into the scorers table.... but robert horry the guy who THREW steve nash into the scorer's table was unpunished. )

I like your points. Regarding the 6'3" Michael Lee's last ditch attempt--it should have never come to that point. I remember that game painfully as the one where KU lost the National Championship with the clock stopped (shooting FTs), no one in our shooter's face (shooting FTs), and missing FT after FT. Hate to belabor those old stats, but if KU even hit their season avg. on FTs, KU wins easily. KU had Syracuse beaten in live action, simply lost it on the FT line.
And this is NOT the same as the KU win over Memphis. So how did 6'6 CDR not block 6'2" Chalmers shot? He was damn close. Its about cojones (Chalmers has it), rehearsal (took 'big' shots all season long), and confidence (Chalmers definitely has that). He is no shrinking violet under pressure. Some players in a big situation may try too hard to get the perfect shot off, and it actually is slowed down as they try to gather up perfectly...its all the hesitation the defense needs. Im not theorizing really about what/why Lee got swatted, but it should never, ever have come down to that shot. And I always liked Mike Lee.....Its not at all about height either: if it were simply about height, then Chalmers, Vaughn, Iverson shouldnt have been in the NBA (rubbish). My point is they are big-time ballers, irrespective of size, and I hope Tyshawn elevates his game eventually to that level. I will wait patiently for this budding baller (TT) to get there too...but in the context of BillBall. Its the system/team that wins.

6'6 Cdr doesn't block that shot because 6'6 CDR did not have the foot speed to cover the distance...... WHat he was doing playing the 2 for that team i do not know...... great Player but size made him 3 when they needed a 2...... I also like ty as the 6th man off the bench..... if he has doubts two names for you... Ben Gordon and Manu Ginobili.... guys who make their teams better coming off the bench but still make SOLID Impact on games. guys who have similiar size and abilities to Tyshawn..... ( They both have a more consistant shot though, they shoul they make money doing this )
