MU to test for sickle cell

Columbia, Mo. — University of Missouri athletes will face mandatory sickle cell tests in a change spurred by the 2005 preseason death of a 19-year-old football player. The change comes less than three months after the school agreed to pay $2 million to the family of reserve linebacker Aaron O’Neal. The redshirt freshman collapsed and later died during a voluntary summer workout.

Beginning a sentence with "no offense but..." and then proceeding to say something terribly offensive, is much akin to what the previous posters have done. I have no idea whether KU is testing for this but they absolutely should be. This is an easy test that can be completed along with all other testing that is done on incoming athletes. I'll assume the previous posters are either uninformed or made poor attempts at humor about a condition that afflicts almost exclusively the African-American population. There is no reason not to include this test for incoming student-athletes, especially when considering the possible ramifications. I'll bet people would not be so glib if this had happened to Rush or Chalmers

This is really a disgrace.

First, MU apparently is found liable for letting a kid play with a disease that killed him.

Second, apparentlydue to trying to delay and avoid paying a court settlement to the family, they apparently delay instituting testing for the disease and so apparently expose their players to another 5 years of being untested before finally instituting doing the right thing!

MU has hit a new low.

Parents, don't send your kids there.

All the above is opining.

Wasn't this the kid they all rallied around ???? A couple years ago, wasn't this the kid that booger quoted as his biggest motivation to "win the north." I seem to rmeember the number of a young linebacker being everywhere...... from shoes, to theback of helmets to being in the stands..... Even ESPN specials......

NOW, the family sues the university..... is getting the 2 mill in compensation....

If it's true they all rallied around this kid.... DOn't ya think Mizzou has pulle din at least two million off this boy already.... how many bowls bids and wins.... how much of that money is in part because of this kid..... don't you think the parents deserve this money ?????

I am torn though..... Does that mean an injury on the field makes mizzou liable ???? If a kid gets into a head-on collision, and becomes paralyzed; Is that mizzou's fault also ??? The kid chose to play football.... if football killed him.... isn't that his problem at some point ????

but it goes to show Mizzou for ya..... they do a reasonably respectable thing at the time, they treat the kid like a fallen comrade..... they make him their charge to glory.... and after the glory..... the parents sue MIzzou for damages...... typical Tigers

Obviously, everyone feels bad for the family here. But really, $2 million (????)
Couldn’t this kid have died playing pickup basketball on a hot summer evening with the same condition?

Although I am the first one to mock Misery U whenever the opportunity presents itself, this is just a sign of the litigious times we live in – KU could easily be next

My comment was directed at the university of missouri, not at an African American nor a college athlete doing what he loved.

Litigious society? Bank on it. Did the family know he had sickle cell anemia? Did they report it to the athletic department? Was the coach and medical staff aware?

My regards to the O'Neal family.

If I remember correctly, this kid didn't just drop dead. He took a long time to die while the staff did nothing, even intimating that he wasn't tough enough. And they took him to an office somewhere instead of the hospital, delaying his medical care. If I were the parents I think I'd have wanted my revenge as well, and where better to hit them than in the pocket book.

Oldalum has it correct. The staff was 100% negligent. Reading the court account is heart breaking. Each and every nitwit who had a hand in this horrible situation should lay awake at night wondering what happened to their conscience.
