The Memphis Grizzlies tried to acquire former Kansas University guard Mario Chalmers during Thursday’s NBA Draft, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported Saturday.
Miami Heat officials said they turned down the Grizzlies’ offer of a first-round pick (No. 27 overall) for the Heat’s starting point guard. Memphis has former KU forward Darrell Arthur on its roster.
The Grizzlies also offered their No. 2 overall pick to the Heat for former Kansas State standout Michael Beasley. The Heat also declined that offer.
The Sun Sentinel reports that Chalmers “according to numerous insiders, has been the star of the Heat’s offseason workouts.”

Chalmers in Memphis. That would be golden! But I'd fear for his life there. He's kind of notorious in the eyes of Memphis. And that's a dangerous place. The FBI just annointed it the most dangerous city in America this year.

....and people wonder why Memphis is maybe the worst NBA franchise in the NBA. (maybe 2nd only to the Clippers) -- Those might've been the worst 2 trade-offers I have ever read. The memphis idiots should be now and forever annoited as their new team name...
Maybe had the Memphis Idiots tried to leverage their 2nd overall pick with Minnesota for Minnesota's picks at 6 & 18 -- then packaging pick #6 for Chalmers & Miami's 2nd round pick in 2010 might've at least been moderately logical, but trying to get one of the best rookies from last year, straight-up for pick #27 in possiblly the worst draft in NBA history is laughable. -- Even had Memphis tried trading a (so far) disappointing Mike Conoley & their 27th overall pick for Chalmer is at least an acceptable gamble, but this? I'm insulted for Chalmers & I don't even know the guy...
-- As for Beasley, wow, that trade-offer is even more insulting & mind-numbingly stupid. Did anybody see him play at the Rookie vs. Second-year all-star challenge, or especially at the end of the year? By the end of the season Beasley was averaging 21 & 8 & he's barely 20 years old. -- Nobody besides B. Griffin in this draft has as much upside as Beasley. -- Maybe Memphis trading Gasol as well as the #2nd pick, again, might've been at least a consideration, but who are they kidding with this? I'm not at all qualified to work for the NBA in any capacity whatsoever & even I know these were bogus trade offers...I truly feel sorry for D. Arthur & his 11th-hour b.s kidney condition. I hope he can survive for 2 more yrs & then get out of this NBA purgatory called, the Memphis Idiots...

...and finally, speaking of leveraging bogus failed kidneys...If I were D. Arthur, and if given this hypothetical option: I would realistically consider trading away one of my kidneys to ger out of Memphis asap...

Yeah, I kinda feel bad for Arthur too. The other guys from the 08 draft like Chalmers, Rush, and Darnell are all going to be playing alot more, on better teams. Arthur should have that too.

Yates, you do understand that Memphis was offering the number 2 pick over all (Hasheem Thabeet, as it turned out) for Beasley, and the 27th pick for Mario, don't you? The Grizzlies valued Beasley much more than they did Chalmers.

Miami would have been the dumbest team in the league to have done that trade for the 27th pick. A pick that ended up being used on demarre carroll.

A local sports talk radio guy made an interesting comment the other day here in Memphis. He said that the Grizzlies, with no love lost for the U of M Tigers, must be trying to draft at least one player from a college team that spanked them (UofM) in the most recent college season,just to add another thorn in their side. First it was Arthur and now it's Carroll. If the Mario trade was to have happened, he would have needed 24/7 security here in Memphis!

During the NBA draft they projected Darrell Arthur as a starter next year. I hope that is true, it would add a lot more interest to the NBA for me. But if he isn't starting/playing a lot for a team like that, Memphis' talent evaluators/coaches should be cannned.

Chalmers is just getting started. Wade and Chalmers are going to make up the league's most dangerous backcourt next season, because Chalmers' defense is going to bleed into Wade's game. They'll be running and gunning.
Miami should be in position to draft Cole, forming a Kansas South lineup of Chalmers, Aldrich, and Beasley.
Steals, blocks, rebounds and Wade. LLC

does miami have someone else's pick next year? - cuz no way that draft high enough to get Cole. He's a top 5 pick. He would've been top 5 this year after the workouts.
A 7 footer with an NBA defensive game - a SOLID mid-range jumpshot - decent inside offense - nice touch around the rim - and strong work ethic and character. Top 5 at worst.

Since neither trade offer made sense from the standpoint of the players involved (why would Riley want to give up one or two future cornerstones?), then the offers had to have been made either because the Memphis had salary problems (unlikely), or because Memphis believed Miami might have salary problems imminent.

Miami does have to try & cut their payroll but doing this trade wouldn't be the way to do it. Honestly, if any team has to cut team salaries for next year, it's Memphis, simply because of their small-market locale and absolute dreadful attendance... Miami's attendance rank for 2009 was 15th (middle of the pack) while Memphis' was the 2nd worst...
The mandatory salary for the 27th pick in 2009 draft is set at: $841.400
Mario’s salary for year two of his contract is (because he was taken in rd 2) -- $773,500
Beasley’s salary for year-two of his mandatory maximum pay scale is $3,865,500
The mandatory maximum salary for the 2nd overall pick in 2009 draft; next year is: $3,715.700
Miami would only be gaining (roughly) $82,000 in salary-cap space for 2010 if they had taken the bait on both trades. -- Also add into consideration, the millions of dollars lost in licensing revenue for Chalmers & Beasley Jerseys sold next year vs.the hypothetical lack of jerseys sold for picks 2 & 27 of this year’s draft, & Miami would've realistically lost revenue....Again, these are pretty basic financial consideration which I found merely by searching the web for 5 minutes -- and taking in the broad assumption that Memphis probably hadn't considered or cared about these basic complications c/o their offers to Miami is yet another example of their incompetence as a franchise.
Get out of there as fast as possible, D. Arthur!!!

Lastly, I’m no Bill James by any stretch of the imagination, but I bet if someone smarter than I, came up with a compilation-statistical theory, deciding the most productive player in the NBA – taking into consideration for each individual player: things like minutes played, points scored, assists, steals, rebounds, their team's win/loss record , home attendance & maybe most importantly, an individual player’s salary -- Mario Chalmers would’ve been one of the best deals of 2009 I am almost certain – right up the with Rose, Labron James, P. Gasol & Rondo…?
It all starts to get really complicated for Miami & other competitive teams like them, obviously, after players outperform their initial 3-year mandatory contract & team X is faced with the option of signing player X to a much more lucrative guaranteed $$ -- after which, these players may just lose their middle-class enthusiasm for chasing down loose balls, etc…I don’t see Mario having this problem of getting fat, rich & lazy after signing a bigger deal in the future…He’s no Derrick Coleman…Beasley, on the other hand…hmm? We’ll have to wait & see how good he really wants to be…

Completely agree with lhohman3's assessment of Chalmers & Beasley.
Chalmers has always had the eye of the Tiger... Beasley to me, like Wayne Simien was, is a 3 year test.
Both were dominant 6'9" guys in college.
The thing that sucks for both Wayne & Michael is they are
1. Both 6'9"
&
2. Didn't learn how to be a point guard at a young age (like Lebron)
Beasley will continue to get his stuff swatted until he learns better footwork & just flat out accepts there will always be four guys on the court taller than him.

How ironic would that have been having those two in that town? They both hit huge shots during our great comeback.

Is there any connection between Memphis and Miami's management? Perhaps this is the way for Miami management to motivate their second players, letting them know that they are never safe from being traded, making them work harder. LOL
