Murphy setting example

Back in my day we had a guy name Dorian Brew who another guy named Gerald McBurrows who got burned early and often in each every game when Bob Fello was the defensive-coordinator. Then Mason brought in Mike Hankwitz and he brought a d-backs coach named David Gibbs. In one single year, they turned our defense around and made these two corners play on a completely different level. Everyone thought back then that we didn't have the talent, that they were too slow to cover top receivers, etc. After some good coaching, they both played in the NFL. Brew was a third round choice by the Dolphins. Pretty amazing considering he was too slow and not talented enough.

Talent is not the problem, it is coaching...plain and simple. Anyone who has coached beyond the Division I level sees it and knows it.

KU has a lot more talent than people on here think. We need better coaching and we need it now. I want to see Bill Miller make the impact I thought he would have this year. He is a damn good coach.

Murphy setting example

We are definitely scheme challenged, but we probably don't have the talent to be one of the top 5 defenses in the country either. However, we enough talent to be one the better defenses in the Big 12 and as of right now, we may be the worst defense in the Big 12. We should be better than we are, with the current players we have.

This is a coaching issue every which way you look at it. If they aren't learning the stuff, then the coaches aren't very good teachers. If the schemes put them in the wrong positions, then the coaches are very good schemers, etc. I can handle players making a few mistakes here and there as they learn, but we can't use that excuse every year after they have had more and more experience.

BTW, everyone thought the Denver Broncos would have the worst defense in the NFL this year with the lack of "talent" they had on defense. So far, they have been the best. While Dawkins has been a big impact for them, the new set of Defensive coaches, including Mike Nolan are the biggest reason they went from being the worst defense last year to the best defense this year.

Yes, I know it is NFL and all the talent in the NFL is at the very least decent, but the point is to show that coaching DOES make a difference.

Five-star rating

Lew Perkins just might be the best AD Kansas has ever had. He has raised money, improved facilities while keeping tradition, and he is trying to make all sports to be top tier programs, especially football...which is important because it can help support the other sports. I wish he would have bee the AD when I was there.

Jayhawks’ defense exposed by ISU

I read an article earlier this week that this was the first game this season where Bowen prepared a game plan specifically for the team they were playing. If this isn't a sign that he is a terrible D-Coordinator, I don't want it will take to convince people. I think he is a good coach and recruiter, but he does not have what it takes to coordinate a defense by reading film, game planning, scheming, and calling plays.

Please Mangino, let Miller take over now.

Jayhawks not taking Cyclones for granted

My understanding is that he has a bone contusion and they can take a long time to heal and they can continue to hurt enough that you might favor it. I had one on my shin when I played and it didn't really heal until after the season. I still have some calcification on the bone where I had it.

Here is some more info:

Bone contusions go by a number of names including bone bruise, bone edema and bone swelling. A contusion by definition is ‘A bruise; an injury attended with more or less disorganization of the subcutaneous tissue and effusion of blood beneath the skin, but without apparent wound. ‘ Although this is the definition for a skin contusion, the same definition applies to bone. A bone contusion is an injury that involves injury to the surface bone and subsequent damage to the underlying bone sub-structure.

Bone contusions may be viewed as a subtle form of fracture. Sure, there’s no defined break, but the bone is going to manage a bone contusion just as if the bone is fractured.

So how long does a bone contusion take to heal? Might take even longer than a fracture in that the bone is effected by a crush (contusion) injury. So plan on months for complete healing. Granted, the rate of healing will vary by the general health of the patient, the nature of the injury and the location of the injury.

Nebraska or Missouri? Plus, Big 12 WR team rankings

I actually think Mizzou will win this game, but I do think it will be close.

Mangino lauds his players’ attention to detail

Sounds like Mangino has recruited the right kind of players....the ones that will put in the extra work to become better. These type of guys will not only make the program better, but they will start a tradition for the future which is very important. If and when KU starts getting 4 and 5 star recruits and they are working extra hard to make themselves better....that is when we will know that KU football has finally arrived and can compete on a yearly basis for championships.

I see a lot of similarities between Mangino and Mason, but I think Mangino understands what is needed to take it to the next level. He really impresses me as a college coach.

Close to consensus

Nolan Cromwell and Bobby Douglas deserve some mention here as well. I am amazed at how some of our great are not really mentioned as much as they should be.

Reesing will be consider one of the greats when he is done playing, but now is not the time. I have great respect for him saying that.

Mangino calm, collected

I concur, finally an insightful article that isn't full of Keegan's insights that are completely wrong.
